DOHA – The Round of 16 at the FIVB Volleyball Boys' U17 World Championship Qatar 2026 delivered a series of highly competitive and exciting games, as the qualified teams battled for places in the quarter-finals at the Women's Sports Arena, Aspire Zone and Al Arabi Sports Club Arena.
France opened the Round of 16 at the Women's Sports Arena, Aspire Zone by securing a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Spain in a thrilling five-set encounter. The sets finished 23-25, 25-19, 25-16, 23-25 and 15-10. The win earned France the first quarter-final spot and kept its title ambitions firmly on track.
The game brought together Spain, the European runners-up, and France, who finished third in Europe. It also pitted France, the tournament leaders, against Spain, who reached the Round of 16 as the best fourth-placed team.
Following the victory, France head coach Philippe Marie Salvan expressed his delight, saying the win carried special significance. "We knew before the game that it would be very difficult, especially against a familiar opponent. We have played each other many times. At the last European Championship, we lost 3-2 to Spain and finished third, while Spain were runners-up. So this victory is a form of redemption, and I cannot find the words to express how happy I am."
On the tactical approach, Salvan said: "Our challenge was to serve strongly and effectively to put pressure on Spain's reception and limit their attacking options, while maintaining a stable and effective reception on our side. At the start, I was frustrated because the players did not fully follow our tactical plan in serving, blocking and defence. We regained our tactical balance in the second and third sets and won both. Our focus dropped in the fourth set, which Spain took advantage of, but we turned the momentum around in the fifth set and secured the victory."
French player Antonin Bonnard also praised his team's performance, saying: "I played well in a strong and difficult game against a tough opponent. Spain also played at a high level, and we congratulate them. I believe we were better in blocking and defence, and that made the difference. Now we want to focus on the quarter-final and work to win it. This is my first visit to Qatar, and I have found the people here very friendly. We thank everyone for the warm hospitality and welcome in Doha."
At Al Arabi Sports Club Arena, Iran produced a commanding performance to defeat Chinese Taipei 3-0, winning 25-18, 25-19 and 25-21 to advance to the quarter-finals and set its sights on the next challenge.
In one of the biggest surprises of the championship, defending champions and European champions Italy were eliminated in the Round of 16 after losing 3-1 to Argentina, who had advanced from third place in the preliminary round. Argentina won 25-20, 25-23, 20-25 and 25-16 at the Women's Sports Arena, Aspire Zone, booking a place in the quarter-finals and strengthening their hopes of reaching the podium.
Argentina head coach Leonardo Nocenti said: "We are very happy and proud to be taking part in this championship and competing in major continental and international tournaments. Today, we achieved an important victory over a strong and outstanding team, Italy, the defending champions. We imposed our style through well-organized tactical attacks, along with strong blocking and defence, to secure a valuable victory against a top-level opponent."
Following Italy's elimination, head coach Francesco Conci acknowledged the difficulty of the game, saying: "As European champions and defending champions, we faced a tough Argentina team with several talented players who do not make many mistakes. We faced difficulties during the game and made several errors, particularly in the first and second sets, and we were unable to maintain our usual level in both attack and defence."
At Al Arabi Sports Club Arena, Venezuela recorded another major upset, overcoming Bulgaria 3-2 in a thrilling five-set battle, 30-28, 25-17, 19-25, 18-25 and 15-12, to secure its quarter-final berth and move into the next stage with renewed ambitions. The opening set produced the third-highest combined score in a single set at the championship, matching the total recorded in the Mexico-Poland and Spain-Bulgaria games during the preliminary round.
Brazil also began its knockout campaign strongly at the Women's Sports Arena, Aspire Zone, defeating India 3-0, 25-17, 25-13 and 25-14, to book its place in the quarter-finals and continue its pursuit of the title.
In another closely contested game at Al Arabi Sports Club Arena, Poland defeated Türkiye 3-2, winning 22-25, 25-27, 25-20, 25-20 and 15-9, to secure a place among the final eight and continue its challenge in the decisive stages with renewed ambitions.
In an all-Asian-African Round of 16 clash at the Women's Sports Hall in Aspire Zone, Pakistan defeated Egypt 3-2 to secure a place in the quarter-finals. Pakistan prevailed 17-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-15 and 15-12 in a fiercely contested encounter.
Notably, all four teams from Group D — Egypt, Bulgaria, Spain and Türkiye — have now been eliminated from the tournament. Egypt's hopes of progressing were ultimately undone by a decline in the team's physical performance, particularly across the third, fourth and fifth sets.
In the final Round of 16 encounter, Romania continued their confident run at Al Arabi Sports Club Hall, overcoming Tunisia 3-1 with set scores of 25-16, 25-11, 23-25 and 25-19. The victory secured Romania's place in the quarter-finals and kept their title aspirations firmly alive.
Attention now turns once again to the Women's Sports Hall in Aspire Zone on Thursday, August 27, 2026, as the quarter-finals get underway with four highly anticipated clashes. France will face Romania at 11:00 a.m., followed by Venezuela against Brazil at 2:00 p.m. Iran will then take on Pakistan at 5:00 p.m., before Argentina and Poland conclude the day's quarter-final action at 8:00 p.m.
