DOHA – Monday marked the completion of the Round of 16 line-up at the FIVB Volleyball Boys' U17 World Championship Qatar 2026, following a fiercely contested preliminary round in which the world's elite teams battled for places in the knockout stage.
France stamped its authority on Pool A, taking sole possession of top spot with nine points after securing its place in the Round of 16 with a commanding straight-sets victory over Venezuela, winning 27-25, 25-14 and 25-15 at the Women's Sports Arena in Aspire Zone. Tunisia finished runners-up with six points, while Venezuela placed third with three.
Following France's qualification, head coach Philippe Marie Salvant praised his team's performance in the opening stage, emphasizing that the players executed their game plan successfully and maintained an unbeaten record. He added that the team achieved its objective of winning every set and competing for top spot in the group.
He added (We set ourselves a clear target from the very beginning to win every set and finish the first phase in first place. We managed to achieve that, which is a tremendous achievement. I have congratulated the players, and now we need to put the first phase behind us and turn our full attention to the second phase, which starts Tuesday at 11 a.m.).
Poland secured a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Mexico in an exciting and closely contested encounter at the Women's Sports Hall in Aspire Zone, winning the sets 30-28, 17-25, 23-25 and 20-25. The result confirmed Poland's qualification for the Round of 16 as runners-up in Pool C with seven points, behind group leaders Brazil on eight, while Argentina finished third with three points.
The opening set of the Mexico-Poland clash, which ended 30-28, recorded the second-highest total of points in a single set at the championship, behind the set between Spain and Bulgaria in the preliminary round on August 21, which ended with the same scoreline.
Poland head coach Sebastian Pawlik said: (Today's match was the toughest one for us because our opponents had to win and had nothing to lose, and they played a good match. I am pleased that we managed to do what we needed to do. As for our next match, we still do not know who our opponent will be. We have to wait for the final match between Türkiye and Bulgaria to determine who we will face. In any case, we need to stay focused and maintain the high level we have been showing).
In Pool B, Romania produced a commanding performance to overcome India 3-1 at Al Arabi Sports Club, winning the sets 21-25, 25-23, 18-25 and 16-25. The victory lifted Romania into second place with six points, trailing defending champions Italy, who topped the pool with nine points, while India finished third on three points.
In Pool E, Pakistan secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Algeria, winning the sets 25-17, 25-17 and 25-17 to claim second place in the pool with six points, behind leaders Iran on nine points, while Chinese Taipei finished third with two points.
In Group D, Bulgaria defeated Türkiye 3-1, winning 25-23, 18-25, 25-19 and 25-20 to move to six points and take sole possession of top spot in the group. Egypt finished second with four points, ahead of Türkiye on set difference, with the Turks also on four points. Group D is the only group in the tournament to have all four of its teams qualify for the Round of 16, with Spain securing the final qualification spot.
Eight Round of 16 Clashes for Quarter-Final Berths
The spotlight shifts today, Tuesday, to the Round of 16 of the FIVB Volleyball Boys' U17 World Championship Qatar 2026, as the tournament enters its decisive knockout phase, featuring a host of highly anticipated encounters with the qualified teams vying to secure their passage to the quarterfinals.
The Women's Sports Arena, Aspire Zone will see France and Spain open the day at 11:00 a.m. Italy will meet Argentina at 2:00 p.m., before Brazil takes on India at 5:00 p.m. The final encounter of the day will bring together Pakistan and Egypt in an Asian African showdown at 8:00 p.m. All four matches will be played at the Women's Sports Arena, Aspire Zone.
Al Arabi Sports Club Arena will also be at the heart of the Round of 16 action, with Iran taking on Chinese Taipei at 11:00 a.m. The schedule continues with Bulgaria versus Venezuela at 2:00 p.m., followed by a compelling European encounter between Poland and Türkiye at 5:00 p.m. The day will end at 8:00 p.m. with Romania facing Tunisia in a European African clash. All four matches will be staged at Al Arabi Sports Club Arena.
