The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) announced Friday that the State of Qatar has won the bid to host the 2029 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship, following the federation’s board meeting held in the Philippine capital, Manila. Qatar officially submitted its bid to host the 2029 edition of the championship, which received widespread acclaim after being thoroughly reviewed and evaluated by the FIVB. The federation’s decision to award Qatar the hosting rights marks a historic milestone for the Middle East, as the tournament will be held in the region for the first time in its 70-year history. The selection reflects Qatar’s advanced infrastructure, world-class sports facilities, modern transportation networks, and its strong commitment to developing sports in general and volleyball in particular. It also highlights the country’s human capital, cultural legacy, and accumulated expertise in organizing major international sporting events across various disciplines.

The FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship is one of the most prestigious and competitive tournaments on the federation’s calendar, featuring 32 teams from around the globe. The event enjoys a prominent status in the global sports arena due to its high level of competition and the participation of elite volleyball stars.

On this occasion, HE President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani stated that Qatar’s selection to host the 2029 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship reaffirms the country’s distinguished position on the global sports map as a key and active partner in the Olympic movement and a prime destination for international federations that trust Qatar’s organizational capabilities. He added that Qatar has demonstrated its ability to host major international tournaments thanks to its advanced infrastructure, conducive environment that ensures success, qualified national workforce, and extensive experience in organizing world-class sporting events. His Excellency continued that this achievement represents a new step toward realizing Qatar’s sports vision, adding that they continuously seek to expand their cooperation with international stakeholders, reinforcing Qatar’s status as a strong contender to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036. It also reflects Qatar’s commitment to Olympic values, youth empowerment, and investing in sports as a means of bringing nations together and achieving sustainable development.

For his part, HE Secretary-General of the Qatar Olympic Committee Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain expressed pride in Qatar’s successful bid to host the 2029 championship. He stated that this accomplishment reflects the FIVB’s confidence in Qatar’s organizational capabilities, adding tha they are confident that this edition will be the best in the history of the tournament. His Excellency added that Qatar’s hosting of this championship once again confirms its leadership in organizing major global sporting events to the highest standards, stressing that they are committed to delivering a unique sporting experience for all participants and fans, befitting Qatar’s prominent role in hosting and organizing top-tier international sports events. He underscored that they will work diligently to ensure that the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship contributes to sustainable development, in line with the Qatar Olympic Committee’s 2023–2030 strategy. His Excellency emphasized that preparations for this major global event will begin immediately in coordination with all relevant entities, stressing the importance of collective efforts to deliver an exceptional edition that reflects Qatar’s stature on the global sports stage. He concluded by thanking the International Volleyball Federation for its trust, and promised to provide the best conditions and atmosphere for guests, teams, and fans, ensuring a distinguished edition that meets the highest international standards.

Meanwhile, President of the FIVB Fabio Azevedo commented that hosting the 2029 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship in Qatar marks a new and significant chapter in the history of the sport. Through this decision, which grants a new country the honor of hosting the most important global tournament, they are partnering with a nation that truly understands volleyball’s power to unite people, inspire youth, and celebrate its positive impact.

CEO of Volleyball World Ugo Valensi said that the Middle East is one of the fastest-growing markets in the global volleyball landscape, and they are proud to host the World Championship in the region for the first time in 2029. Qatar has proven its world-class organizational capabilities through hosting major international sports events, and volleyball enjoys strong popularity in the country. This championship presents an opportunity to deepen collaboration, attract new audiences, and set new standards for the sport in innovation and fan experience.

Qatar boasts an impressive track record in hosting international sports events, having organized 18 world championships over the past two decades. These include the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the first edition held in the Middle East and widely regarded as the best in tournament history, the 2010 World Indoor Athletics Championships, the 2014 World Short Course Swimming Championships, the 2015 World Handball Championship, the 2016 World Cycling Championships, the 2018 World Gymnastics Championships, the 2019 World Athletics Championships, the inaugural ANOC World Beach Games, Qatar 2019, the 2023 World Judo Championships, the 2024 World Aquatics Championships, and the 2025 World Table Tennis Championships.

Doha is also preparing to host upcoming events such as the 2026 World Shooting Championships, the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup, and the 2030 Asian Games. Qatar’s successful bid to host the championship further strengthens its legacy of organizing major global sports events, especially as it actively engages in discussions with the International Olympic Committee regarding the hosting of the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
